Madre aún amamanta a su hija de 4 años

Sarah Everett es madre de tres hijos y defensora de algo llamado ‘periodo natural para amamantar’, que significa dejar de hacerlo hasta que el menor lo exija.

Por ello Sarah, fotógrafa de 32 años que vive en Colchester, Essex, Reino Unido, sigue lactando a su hija de 4 años.

En entrevista con el diario The Sun, Everett dice que se sintió presionada, según los estándares sociales, de dejar de amamantar a su hijo mayor, Archie, ahora de ocho años.

Dice que no piensa hacer lo mismo con su hija menor, Abril. "Comparto muchas fotos de mí alimentando a Abril en Instagram, no para impresionar, sino para empoderar. Con Archie, ni siquiera me di cuenta de que tenía una opción. Lo dejé al año porque pensé que eso es lo que se supone que deben hacer las madres”.

"Es un consuelo para ella, y especialmente lo hace si está muy cansada o mal. Ella dice que la leche ‘sabe a mamá’, que es muy dulce”, añade.

"La gente piensa que así es como la alimento todo el tiempo, pero también come alimentos sólidos. […] Existe este estereotipo de que la convertirá en una niña quisquillosa y pegajosa, pero no lo es. Ella es muy independiente y segura de sí misma. Este tabú sobre la lactancia materna hace que parezca un secreto sin significado, cuando en realidad debería normalizarse”, explica Sarah.

You see, when you reach these milestones often frequency of feeding has decreased considerably. Often mothers no longer talk about it, possibly out of worry of being judged but also just because feeds may only now occur at home, especially at bedtime. Though there is often encouragement and hopefully good support networks for breastfeeding in the early days /weeks /months you can feel like you're all alone as your child gets older. This simply isn't true! You are not alone and my goodness you are amazing! Creating beautiful portraits of mothers breastfeeding their children 2yrs+ this year is going to be an amazing journey and I can't wait to meet other mothers just like me. Women who may never have even expected to get this far or thought there was no way on earth they'd feed a child that could talk! As well as mothers that always knew they would.
